Nepal trekking packages—what’s included vs hidden costs
The Himalayas are not just a destination. They are a feeling. Whether it is the magnetic pull of Mount Everest or the quiet, moss-draped forests of Mardi Himal, trekking in Nepal is a dream for many. But turning that dream into reality involves navigating a maze of logistics, permits, and pricing. A common worry for travellers is the fear of "hidden costs," or arriving in the mountains only to find their budget did not account for hot showers, charging batteries, or specific permits.
At Juniper Outdoor, we believe the only surprise you should encounter on a trek is the breathtaking view around the next bend. We specialise in crafting seamless and expertly managed trekking experiences. We do not just hand you a map. We organise the permits, secure the best lodges, and guide you every step of the way.
In this guide, we will break down exactly what goes into a professional Nepal trekking package, highlight the costs you need to anticipate in Indian Rupees (INR), and help you choose the right journey for your budget and spirit.

When you book a comprehensive package with a premium operator like us, the goal is to handle the heavy lifting of logistics so you can focus on the walk. Here is what constitutes the core of a reliable trekking package with Juniper.
The quality of sleep dictates the quality of your trek. In cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, our packages include stays at premium heritage hotels and charming boutique resorts that blend traditional architecture with modern luxury.
On the trail, accommodation varies by region and package tier:
Ready to find your path in the Himalayas? Explore our Nepal Trekking Packages
A standard trekking package generally operates on a "Full Board" basis during the trek. This means breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included while you are on the mountain. We ensure you have the fuel needed to conquer the climbs. Meals in cities like Kathmandu are usually limited to breakfast to allow you the freedom to explore local culinary scenes.
For our premium Everest packages, we even include boiled drinking water served by a dedicated waterboy throughout the trek to ensure hydration safety.
This is the backbone of your safety. A reputable package includes an experienced English-speaking Sherpa guide and a porter team. For instance, on our EBC expedition, we maintain a ratio of one porter for every two guests to ensure your duffel bags (up to 12kg) are carried for you.
Getting to the trailhead is often an adventure in itself. We manage all these transfers seamlessly.
Flights: Packages for the Everest region do not include the international flight cost, but round-trip internal flight from Ramechap (or Kathmandu) to Lukla. For Annapurna and Mardi Himal, the domestic flight between Kathmandu and Pokhara is standard.
Ground Transport: Whether it is a private vehicle to Kande for the Mardi trek or a van drive to Syabrubesi for Langtang, private ground transportation ensures comfort and safety.

Even with an "all-inclusive" package, the mountains have their own economy. Being aware of these extra costs ensures you do not get caught off guard.
At Juniper, we include all necessary trekking permits and conservation area fees in our package price to save you the hassle of bureaucracy. However, if you were evaluating costs generally, you should know that different regions require specific permits, like the Sagarmatha National Park Entry or the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit).
Important Update: While the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management Systems) card is mandatory for regions like Annapurna and Langtang, the Everest region uses a specific local rural municipality permit (Trek Card) instead of TIMS. We handle the specific paperwork required for your chosen route so you do not have to worry about the changing regulations.
For regions like Upper Mustang or Dolpo, special restricted area permits are required. Correction to common knowledge: The previous flat fee of $500 for Upper Mustang has been updated by the Nepal government in late 2025. The new fee structure is approximately $50 per person per day (approx. ₹4,200), making shorter trips more accessible.
In the high Himalayas, electricity and hot water are precious commodities often generated by solar power.
While main meals are covered, that celebratory beverage at the end of the trek, a chocolate bar for energy, or a bottle of soda is a personal expense. These costs rise with altitude due to transport difficulties.
Tipping is not mandatory, but it is a highly ingrained cultural expectation in Nepal to show appreciation for the hard work of the crew. We recommend budgeting for this at the end of your trip.
This is non-negotiable. You must have travel insurance that specifically covers trekking up to the maximum altitude of your trip (e.g., 5,545m for Kala Patthar). This covers potential helicopter evacuations, which can be costly.

Understanding the price difference between treks helps you select the right adventure. The cost is driven by the duration, the remoteness (logistics), and the level of luxury. All prices below are in Indian Rupees (INR).
The Everest Base Camp Trek is the crown jewel, but it is logistically heavy, requiring domestic flights and high-altitude support over two weeks.
Juniper Luxury Package: Our premium EBC trek ranges from ₹2,70,000 (for a group of 5) to ₹3,15,000 (for groups of 2-4).
Why the premium? This includes stays at luxury mountain lodges rather than basic teahouses, flights to Lukla, helicopter contingencies where specified, and a high support ratio.
The Langtang Valley Trek is accessible from Kathmandu by drive, eliminating the need for expensive domestic flights (unless you opt for a helicopter exit).
Juniper Standard Package: An 8-night trip is approximately ₹85,000 per participant.
Heli-Exit Option: For those short on time or wanting a grand finale, we offer a "Trek in, Helicopter out" option, which saves 3 days and adds a thrilling aerial view, costing an additional ₹20,000.
The Mardi Himal Trek is a stunning alternative that offers spectacular views of Machapuchare without the crowds of EBC. It is a shorter-duration trip, making it cost-effective.
Juniper Package: A comprehensive package is roughly ₹90,500 per participant for a group of two, or ₹1,33,000 for a solo traveller.
Inclusions: This covers premium hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, domestic flights, and full board on the trek.
For those seeking a gentler experience, the Annapurna Panoramic Trail offers a 6-day journey through the foothills. Ideally suited for beginners or families, this trek uses comfortable lodges and avoids extreme altitudes. Pricing for this typically falls between the Langtang and Mardi Himal range, depending on group size.

Choosing the right package is about balancing your budget with your comfort and safety requirements.
While we handle the major logistics, there are smart ways to manage your personal spending:
Snacks: Buy your chocolate bars and trail mix in Kathmandu rather than buying them at high-altitude teahouses where prices triple.
Solar Charging: Bring a high-capacity power bank to avoid paying daily charging fees at lodges.
Gear: Ensure you have the right equipment. We provide a detailed packing list to ensure you do not have to buy emergency gear on the mountain.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and helicopter evacuation up to the maximum altitude of your trek is mandatory.
New regulations have largely banned solo trekking in many regions to ensure safety. Trekking with a licensed guide is now mandatory in most National Parks. Juniper ensures you are always compliant with these regulations by providing licensed Sherpa guides.
Even with a full-board package, you should carry roughly NPR 15,000 - 20,000 (approx. ₹10,000 - ₹12,000) for tips, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and beverages. ATMs are scarce to nonexistent in the mountains.
Your safety is our priority. Our guides are trained in first aid. If evacuation is necessary, we coordinate with your insurance provider for a helicopter rescue. This is why insurance is critical.
