Planning Kashmir? Here’s the best time to go
Every traveller sees Kashmir in a different light. Some dream of its meadows in June, while others wait for the Chinar trees to turn gold in October. Many love its stillness under the snow in January. The best time to visit Kashmir depends on what you wish to feel, quiet adventure, gentle comfort, or mountain calm.
At Juniper, we help you make that choice easily. Our mentors and local experts take care of the route, permits, weather planning, and all logistics. You simply arrive ready to enjoy the Himalayas with complete support.
Kashmir’s trekking season usually runs from late June to early October, but the conditions change quickly.
The most reliable window for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is mid-July to early September. By then, the snow melts completely, the passes open, and the alpine lakes reflect the blue of summer.
For those who like quiet trails, late September is ideal. The valleys glow amber, and the crowds thin out. The Vale of Kashmir Trail works beautifully during this time.
Read Juniper’s Premium Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Guide for complete route and camp information.

The Pir Panjal range shields Kashmir from heavy monsoon rain, keeping it drier than Himachal or Uttarakhand. Still, light afternoon showers are common in July and August, so rain jackets are essential.
Summer (May–August)
This is the classic trekking and camping season in Kashmir. The high meadows open up, wildflowers carpet the hillsides, and most alpine lakes are accessible. Days are warm and bright, and you’ll often be walking in a light base layer or t-shirt.
But because the Pir Panjal range blocks heavy monsoon, rain here usually comes as brief afternoon showers or misty drizzles, not days of downpour. They’re refreshing more than troublesome, but a rain jacket is non-negotiable.
Good for: Great Lakes trek, Tarsar Marsar, outdoor camping, long trails
Temperatures: Day ~15–25°C, Night ~6–9°C
Autumn (September–October):
If summer is lush, autumn is crisp and cinematic. Think golden chinar trees, calm blue skies, and extremely clear mountain views. The crowds thin out, trails feel peaceful, and the weather is steady.
Nights start turning colder, but the daytime walking temperature stays near-perfect.
Good for: Clear, scenic treks without summer crowds, photography, relaxed travel
Temperatures: Day ~10–20°C, Night ~2–6°C
Winter (November–February)
Snow begins settling in November and truly builds up by December. High alpine routes close, but the landscape becomes absolutely magical.
Skiers head to Gulmarg (which has one of the best ski slopes in Asia), and winter trekkers explore lower altitudes where pine forests, frozen streams, and soft snowfields create that quiet, cinematic winter mood.
Good for: Snow trekking, skiing, cozy stays in cabins, frozen lake walks
Temperatures: Day ~-4–8°C, Night can drop to -10°C or lower in deeper winter
Spring (March–April)
This is the season of renewal. The snow slowly melts from the lower slopes, orchards burst into bloom (almond, apricot, cherry), and gardens in Srinagar are full of tulips and fresh green lawns.
High-altitude trekking is still limited because the passes are snowbound, but it’s fantastic for gentle walks, photography trips, or village explorations.
Good for: Sightseeing, short hikes, culture tours, flower season
Temperatures: Day ~8–18°C, Night ~1–7°C
Juniper teams track daily forecasts and make on-ground changes for your comfort and safety.

Kashmir’s valleys are shaped by the Himalaya in the north and the Pir Panjal range in the south. The Pir Panjal blocks the heavy monsoon, which means Kashmir stays drier than Himachal or Uttarakhand even at peak season. But the weather still shifts clearly across the year, and each season offers its own rhythm.
Summer (June–August)
This is the classic trekking season. The snowline retreats, the high meadows open, and the lakes become accessible. Trails are green, the grass is soft underfoot, and the wildflowers are at their peak.
Daytime is bright and comfortable for walking. Evenings get cool but not harsh. You might catch light afternoon showers or sweeping clouds, but it rarely rains for days on end.
Best for: Full alpine treks, camping, longer trail journeys
Treks to do:
Kashmir Great Lakes: A string of turquoise lakes ringed by meadows and ridgelines
Tarsar Marsar: Two pristine mountain lakes and wide, flowering valleys
Vale of Kashmir Trail: Gentle gradients and open valley views; friendly for first-time trekkers or families
Temperatures: Day: 15–25°C, Night: 6–9°C
Autumn (September–October)
The scenery gets sharper and more cinematic. The chinar trees turn amber and rust-red, and the skies stay consistently clear. Trails get quieter as summer crowds fade. Walking conditions are ideal during the day, though nights start to turn cooler.
This is the season for hikers who care about color, quiet, and clarity.
Best for: Photography-focused travel, mellow valley treks, slow exploration
Treks to do:
Vale of Srinagar: Garden neighborhoods, lakeside paths, glowing chinars everywhere
Pahalgam Valley Trails: Pine woods, crystal rivers, and saffron fields coming into bloom
Temperatures: Day: 10–20°C, Night: 2–6°C
Winter (November–February)
Snow settles in layers, especially from December onward. The high passes close, but Kashmir doesn’t stop being outdoors-friendly, the focus simply shifts lower.
This is when the quiet magic comes in: pine forests dusted with snow, frozen streams, bonfires at the homestay, and warm Kashmiri noon chai.
Skiers head to Gulmarg, and winter trekkers explore gentle slopes with snow guides.
Best for: Snow trekking, skiing, winter photography, cozy stays
Winter trips to do:
Kuppar Climb: A low-altitude snow trek with safe gradients
Skiing in Gulmarg: Fully instructed, small-group beginner-friendly skiing
Temperatures: Day: -4–8°C, Night: -6 to -12°C depending on altitude.

The most dependable time is mid-July to early September, when all passes are open, the snow has melted, and the alpine lakes are fully visible. Earlier in June, trails may still be blocked by snow, and the weather can be unpredictable.
Yes, winter from December to February turns Kashmir into a snow paradise. Gulmarg is great for skiing and snow treks, while Srinagar and Pahalgam offer cosy stays and quiet views. Juniper arranges safe, fully guided winter experiences.
Absolutely. July brings lush meadows, mild weather, and clear trails for most major treks. It’s also peak season, so booking in advance with Juniper ensures your permits, camps, and transport are all confirmed on time.
At higher camps between 12,000–13,000 ft, temperatures can drop to 2–4°C at night even in midsummer. Juniper recommends carrying high-altitude tents, warm sleeping gear, and pre-trek guidance so you stay comfortable throughout.
Both are special in their own ways. Summer is perfect for trekking and lake views, while winter is ideal for snow walks and skiing. Juniper helps you pick the right season based on your comfort, interests, and weather preferences.
Yes, routes like the Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar need local and forest permits. Rules often change yearly, but Juniper handles all paperwork, including restricted area clearances if required, so you don’t have to worry.
